Vanessa Dmitruk


Vanessa completed her undergraduate degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice with a concentration in Psychology at Carleton University in 2008. She received the Carleton University Scholarship and the Gerhard Herzberg Scholarship for academic excellence and graduated with High Honours on the Dean’s Honour List. Shortly after graduation, Vanessa began her work as a front-line mental health counsellor at Family Tree Youth Services, a residential treatment program for youth with severe mental health problems. During this time Vanessa became acutely aware of the value and need for short term skills based treatment in stabilizing severely troubled adolescents. This defining experience inspired Vanessa to pursue graduate training to further develop her knowledge and expertise in brief but highly intensive treatment approaches. In 2012, she began her Master of Counselling Psychology degree with Athabasca University in Calgary.

While working as a Child and Youth Counsellor at Family Tree Youth Services, Vanessa received specialized training in Crisis Intervention, Suicide Prevention, Treatment Planning and Behaviour Modification. She delivered programs in Emotion Regulation and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills via innovative and creative treatment approaches that were geared to engage hard to reach adolescents. Vanessa has also worked as an Educational Assistant with the Ottawa Catholic School Board since 2012. Within this role, Vanessa has adopted a collaborative and creative approach to working with children and youth diagnosed with psychiatric disorders as well as intellectual and learning disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down Syndrome, and Global Developmental Delay. Vanessa has experience as a Crisis Line Counsellor with the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre, as a Geriatric Day Hospital Support Worker with the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, and as a Visitation Supervisor with Family Services Ottawa.

Vanessa completed her Clinical Internship at the Ottawa Psychological Health Centre under the supervision of Corrine Easy, M.C. Psych, C. Pysch. Assoc., and Dr. Cindy Maddeaux, Ph.D, C. Psych. Vanessa trained in a variety of Cognitive Behaviour based therapeutic models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy. Vanessa is currently treating individual clients in addition to conducting a series of skills-based psychotherapeutic programs for children, youth, and adults in Emotion-Regulation, Executive Functioning Skills, Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics, and Habit Reversal Training.

Born in Toronto but raised in Ottawa, she and her husband of four years are new parents and enjoy travel.
